Controls
The NES controller maps the original A and B face buttons to Z and X on your keyboard. Start and Select map to Enter and Shift. Save and load states let you bookmark your progress at any point — press S to save your current position and L to return to it anytime. Click inside the game window first to make sure it captures keyboard input.
Gradius is the 1986 Konami side-scrolling shoot-em-up that brought one of the arcade's most mechanically inventive games home to the NES. Options — drone companions that mirror the Vic Viper's movement and fire its weapons — transform Gradius from a standard shooter into something more complex. With two Options in formation, your firepower triples and you can cover angles the ship itself cannot face. The challenge becomes protecting your Options alongside your ship, and losing all upgrades upon death creates a brutal feedback loop: underpowered, you die again, fall further behind, and eventually exhaust your continues. The Konami Code was originally created as a cheat for Gradius to help developers test later stages.
Gradius established conventions that defined the horizontal shoot-em-up genre — the power meter system, the Option mechanic, and the iconic biological-entity boss designs appear in dozens of successors and spiritual heirs. Its NES soundtrack is among the finest on the platform, and the game's distinctive visual language — crystal formations, moai heads, volcanic backdrops — made it one of the most visually distinctive NES releases. Gradius remains a foundational title for anyone serious about the shoot-em-up genre.
