Action

Ninja Gaiden is the 1988 Tecmo action-platformer that revolutionized storytelling in video games. As Ryu Hayabusa, a ninja seeking to avenge his father's death, you battle through six acts of relentless enemies with a combination of acrobatic sword attacks and ninja arts. The game was the first NES title to use animated cinematic cutscenes between stages — full-screen panels of illustrated action with dialogue boxes — turning what could have been a generic action game into a narrative experience that left players wanting to know what happened next.

About this game

Ninja Gaiden is the 1988 Tecmo action-platformer that revolutionized storytelling in video games. As Ryu Hayabusa, a ninja seeking to avenge his father's death, you battle through six acts of relentless enemies with a combination of acrobatic sword attacks and ninja arts. The game was the first NES title to use animated cinematic cutscenes between stages — full-screen panels of illustrated action with dialogue boxes — turning what could have been a generic action game into a narrative experience that left players wanting to know what happened next.

Ninja Gaiden's gameplay is punishing and precise. Ryu clings to walls and climbs poles with ease, enabling the acrobatic movement that made the game feel different from anything else on the NES. Wind-Mill Throwing Stars, Fire Wheel ninja arts, and the Invincible Fire Wheel defensive ability give combat variety, but the most important skill is patience: the game constantly places fast-moving enemies near ledges and pits, and the devastating design choice of respawning enemies if you scroll the screen back still causes frustration decades later.

Ninja Gaiden's final stage is considered one of the most difficult sequences in NES history — checkpoints reset further back than expected, boss rushes drain resources, and the final confrontation requires near-perfect execution. Yet the game's story, with its twists about Ryu's father, the archaeologist Irene Lew, and the demon Jashin, keeps players pushing forward. Few NES games are remembered with as much simultaneous affection and rage as Ninja Gaiden.
